The Arden Shakespeare has set the gold standard in textual editing for over a century. As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the First Folio on 8th November 2023 and look forward to the launch of the Fourth Series of editions, we explore some of the textual challenges the Folio texts present, focussing on Othello, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Our panellists will discuss questions such as:

  • What do editors need to think about with regard to issues of race, gender and queerness when editing their text?
  • How might their editorial decisions add or change meaning?
  • Do they help us read a play differently, with fresh understanding?

These complex questions will not have simple answers but it will be a lively, informed and provocative discussion, celebrating the First Folio by highlighting how it still poses challenges and opportunities to see the plays anew, as relevant to us now as they were 400 years ago.

Registration is free and the event will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. Registrants will receive the link in due course.

We look forward to seeing you there!
