Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival presents RICHARD III

Author: Chuck Gessert

William Shakespeare’s Richard III, will be presented by the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival (NDSF) August 20 through September 1 at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. The title role will be performed by Michael Gotch. Joining Richard will be many of Chicago’s finest actors including Barbara Robertson as Queen Margaret, Elizabeth Ledo as Lady Anne, Saren Nofs-Snyder as Queen Elizabeth, Maureen Gallagher as the Duchess of York, Matt Daniels as the Duke of Clarence, Jonathan Weir as Lord Stanley and Mark D. Hines as Buckingham.

Members of Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival’s Young Company, which is comprised of students from the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College, Oklahoma City University, DePauw University, University of Denver and Indiana University South Bend round out the cast and feature Nathan Goodrich as Rivers, Aysette Munoz as Princess Elizabeth, Jacob Schrimpf as Dorset, Joey Doyle as Lord Gray, Bobby Bowman as Hastings, Hunter Paul as Richmond, Chris Silvestri as Ratcliffe, and Brett Garrett as Catesby. Also featured in the cast are Scot Shepley as King Edward IV, Paul Ferguson as Prince Edward, Sam Villagra-Stanton as the young Duke of York, and Paul Hanft as Brackenbury.

Shakespeare’s enduring portrayal of England’s most famous villain, a twisted and ruthless monarch, Richard III is directed by Laura Gordon. The recent discovery of King Richard’s remains by archaeologists means there is no better time to see why the “winter of our discontent” turns into a “glorious summer” at the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival.
