2014 - The Merry Wives of Windsor

The Merry Wives of Windsor

By William Shakespeare

Directed by West Hyler

When Sir John Falstaff woos, nothing stands in his way—except the married objects of his affection. When the two ladies learn of his amorous intents, they wreak havoc on the fat knight, defy a jealous husband, and perplex a French physician, all while playing matchmaker for one of their young daughters.

Award-winning director West Hyler updated The Merry Wives of Windsor, moving the setting from Elizabethan England to modern-day Midwest. In West’s adaptation, Falstaff, Shakespeare's funniest character, was uprooted from Chicago and arrived in a small-town in the Midwest where he attempted to woo a couple suburban wives in order to gain access to their husband's bank accounts. West said of his adaptation, “The world we're creating is full of larger than life characters, like high-strung pharmacists, Applebee's waiters full of flair, angsty teenagers in love, and an overweight Chicago mobster who gets duped, dumbfounded and exposed by quick-thinking, fast-acting suburban soccer moms.”

Over 2000 audience members enjoyed the 85-minute performance during the Young Company's 2014 tour detailed below.
