THE DECEIVED
by the Academy of the Intronati of Siena
Directed by Kevin Asselin
A young Italian woman flees from an arranged marriage and endeavors to win back her one true love in this hilarious Renaissance comedy!
Laughter, intrigue, and a huge helping of mistaken identity come together in a story that inspired Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. No one escapes the deception as the best intentions turn lovers into servants, friends into foes, and a lovesick girl into a headstrong boy, at least temporarily; this is a comedy after all! Translated from the original Italian into refreshingly modern English, The Deceived is light-hearted fun for everyone.
Presented outdoors, The Deceived is performed by gifted students from the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, and several other universities across the nation. Performances are free of charge and perfect for a picnic. Enjoy a warm summer evening of mystery and hilarity with the entire family!

The Young Company is a direct outgrowth of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival's mission to provide exceptional and unparalleled educational opportunities in a theatrical setting to gifted students from the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College. Young Company members have graduated from the program to enjoy careers in acting, design and production all over the country!
Invitations to join the Young Company are issued once applicants have completed a series of auditions and interviews to gauge their skills and interests. Accepted students participate simultaneously in the Mainstage production and in a show produced specifically for them. In both cases, Young Company members enjoy working alongside nationally and internationally renowned professionals in a variety of ways.
Students receive training in the practical arts of theatrical production which include voice and speech, stage combat, production management and set and costume construction.
The ongoing development of the Young Company through the season is shared by the Producing Artistic Director of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, the director and selected company members of the Mainstage production and noted local and national figures. Additional teaching in relevant areas is offered by professional artists, academics and/or administrators. Young Company members are also personally mentored by selected artists and production team members from the professional company of Mainstage production.
