Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble
QSE’s Shakespeare Prison Project utilises a combination of Shakespeare text and drama games to create an atmosphere of trust and emotional safety for the participants, and to tease out themes that the inmates want to explore. Performances bring inmates together with other inmates, families, and members of the public. The heart of the project’s philosophy is that the skills required to embody Shakespearean text and perform it with truth and clarity also allow us to move beyond patterns of thought and behaviour in which we have become stuck. The project sees its impact on audiences to be as important as its impact on prisoner participants, in whom it can help to develop emotional bravery, self-awareness, social skills, and commitment to teamwork.
