It is my pleasure to extend congratulations in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the

    Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival.

On this occasion, I join with members of the Festival, the faculty of Notre Dame, students and the community in expressing appreciation for the dedication and commitment of the performers. The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival is to be commended for the educational opportunities presented with such programs as the Young Company and ShakeScenes.

Students performing the poetry and plays of William Shakespeare bring to the audience the masterful artistry of a great writer. I applaud the programs offered by the Notre Dame Festival and appreciate the growth and success it has achieved these past ten years. I am confident the years ahead will provide even greater opportunities for young students in performing the tragedies and comedies of a great playwright.

My best wishes to the performers for a most successful season of providing superb entertainment and classical Shakespearian productions to Hoosiers.

Sincerely,

I am delighted to congratulate the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival in this jubilee tenth

season. The festival has been a great source of pride to north central Indiana, and I am happy

to support it. Hard work and commitment from Hoosier thespians, producers, and supporters have borne fruit in ten good years. I wish the Festival equal success in years to come. As Shakespeare said, “Perseverance keeps honor bright.”

Jill and I certainly enjoy the productions, and collaboration with world-class professionals has been a great learning opportunity for all the student and local actors as well. In this year’s Mainstage show, Twelfth Night, one character laments: “O, had I but followed the arts!” Our thanks are due to the University of Notre Dame and all the supporters of the festival, because we don’t have to say the same.

To the Festival: congratulations. To the audience: welcome. To the actors: break a leg.

Sincerely,
